6 New Web Technologies of 2008 You Need to Use Now

In this article "6 New Web Technologies of 2008 You Need to Use Now", the author lists 6 new web technologies of 2008 that he/she thinks important. The list is:

1. Identity management, such as open id, google sns, facebook connect. My second favorite of 2008. No need to keep track of so many ID online.
2. HTML5, with new features, like audio/video, drag'n'drop support. This one is kinda earlier. Not supported by all browsers I guess.
3. Life streaming, never tried, don't know, not a big fan
4. Firefox 3, My favorite browser, although I am still using FF2 on my EEE pc.
5. Google Chrome. Tried once, not a big fan. No Linux version yet. This one may give FF and IE more pressures on development.
6. Location Awareness. My favorite technology of 2008. With GPS becomes more and more popular in cell phone, it is actually the trend of web services/apps. A website should design with location awareness support.

Review of 2008

Let me review the year of 2008 and plan my 2009.

Things I did in 2008.

* Parent visit us for half year. Spend half year with my parents in 15 years since I left Chongqing in 2003. Parent are old apparently. I am still a child in front of them, but I feel that I am now the leading role in the family and be responsible for the family. I have to take care of them when they are here with us.

* Family issue. A lot of conflict and struggle. It is the seven year itch for sure. Both of us should be more careful with the relationship. Relationship needs more care and love.

* Work. Get more experience with Linux. But spend a lot of time working on WR toolchain. I am now the linux BSP support team. The position is not the core position but it is unique for now. I gain some more experience with kernel upgrade and use git to manage the kernel. Gain more experience with linker, makefile, bash programming.

* My spare time. I spend a lot of time in the first half year to work on the star5.ca website. However, it turns out that to maintain the content may consume so much time. I'd better work on some project to generate content automatically.

* Stock trading. I did not bad compared to the market and I had even some profit so far. I had some good time in Aug and Sep when I was bearish of the market. However, I lost most of the profit in Oct when I was a bit bullish and market fluctuate too much. Fortunately, my portfolio is still green when I bought low in Nov and Dec. My gold and silver investment turns out much better than others. I am also looking into the high dividend stock.

* Sports. I am now a serious runner now. After I finished my second sunrun this year, I decide to do a half-marathon. With not so constant training, I did not bad in myt first HM (1:57). So, I decide to go for a full marathon next year in Vancouver. I finally found a hobby in sports. That's running. I enjoy running outside, with your own pace and pants. To run in a trail, like in Burnaby mountain, is even enjoyable than running on the road.

2009. Better to set some goals.

* Improve family relationship. To prepare the immigration for my parents and in-laws.

* Seek promotion in work and more responsibilities. Overhaul of the build system, nightly build, regression test, kernel benchmarking, open source package validation. Better to keep one co-op in our team for supporting. Setup git repository for kernel development. Submit Broadcom patches to kernel.org.

* Train and run my first full marathon. Prepare for another one in Autumn if the first one is finished well.

* Read the Sci-Fi books I bought. Photography. Video.

* My website or application development.
* search engine of classified.
* restaurant review
* use my server for alrishasoft, haochen, leochen, zjuaavan,
* register domain for friends, other small business, setup website templates

Internet Radio

I bought an Internet Radio/Alarm with a deal from Dell's website (50% off). The brand is Aluratek.

Listening to the new Internet Radio device I bought before the Christmas, I remembered that I was discussing the Internet with Andy the other days. I believe in the next 5-10 years, Internet will be the dominate media. The Internet Radio is the example. I love this device. You can easily browse a list of radio stations and choose what you want. With more than 11,000 stations to choose from all over the world, I can listen to some Chinese radio then. The name of the song/performance broadcast online is also shown on the LCD screen. Although you can listen to radio from your pc/laptop, it may not be as convenient as to setup with this Internet Radio device. I love music and listen to radio ever since my childhood. So, this device is perfect for me. I don't need to turn on computer and I can listen to radio anywhere with the wireless connection.

Given the current trend of video on demand, such as netflix and youtube. I believe that IPTV will dominate the TV market for the next generation, if the content provider finally agree to broadcast their content online, just like the radio station to bring their content online. Younger generation, like my nephew, they are so accustomed to watch video online, play games online. It is so easy to project that in the next 10-20 years, when the teenager is the majority of the society, delivery of content online will the majority.

Although I still buy newspaper sometime, I just read newspaper online in most of the time. It's much easier and convenient to read newspaper online. A Newspaper publisher will go out of business if they can't catch up with this trend.

With Internet as the main media to deliver content to people, there are a lot of business will benefit from this transition in the next 10-20 years, such as digital publishing, wireless network device, Internet radio/tv device, content review, search ...

running in the trail

Running in the transcanada trail on Burnaby Mountain park.

I went running this morning in Burnaby Mountain park. Running in the trail is much better than on the road, I realized just today. No cars, only trees. The trail is paved very well. All leaves have been cleaned and the small rubbles gave your feet a good cushion. The fog and mist everywhere in the park. I felt like running in the cloud. The view was fantastic in the Barnet inlet. I run up and down in the park for about 1 hour. One loop is about 1.6 km. I then run up all the way from the park to the UniverCity and run from UniverCity to residence. In total I did 15k in 1:40. After I run in the park, the loop slope up to the mountain seemed more easier than ever.

The weather was nice today, warm and humid, not cold at all. It's a perfect running day today. I just hope we could have more days like today before the snow comes. I may go running in other parks, as I feel running in the park is really fun, with today's experience.

United Way

This noon, the United Way pledge campaign finished with a hilarious RockBand competition among teams. This campaign is a tradition of our company and this year is the fourth time for me.

The campaign starts with a company sponsored BBQ in last Friday. There are couple of activities in this week to encourage people's participation.

A traditional tower building is one of the must-go. The game rule is changed this year. Instead of building a high tower with spaghetti and marshmallow, we should build a tower using about 20 newspaper and a 2-m scotch tape. This tower should be able to support an empty coke can. Haha, our team won this game by building the highest tower, which reaches the ceil and support an empty coke can. That's a very good engineered paper tower. We use three sticks as the tripod, each was made from rolled newspaper. On top of the tripod, we stick a needle, a thin needle by rolling the newspaper together. One smart design is to insert the needle inside of the hole of the empty pop can. In this case, we don't need to find support of the can. Our design is not original, but our engineering skill is the best, so that we can make the strongest and highest tower.

This lunch time, we have the RockBand competition. I am of course one of the player in our band. We dress up a little bit, with all black shirt and sunglasses. Some other bands dressed with long wig and interesting hats. That's really funny seeing people are really into this game. Although we are not good at playing the guitar or drum, everyone seems have a lot of fun by watching, laughing, applauding, and screaming. One of the important measurement of the performance is the costume. The loudness of the applaud is also counted as score, which is actually measured by a professional noise detector, our lab equipment. :-)

For a company with 80 percent more engineers, our games and competitions are geeky and engineering centric.

I had won a bottle of premium tequila by throwing toonie to reach the bottle from about 4 meters away. The closest win the bottle. I exchanged 5 toonies and just wanna test my luck. I had never thought I could be the winner. Fortunately, in the 3rd one, I throw the toonie very close to the bottle, like in 5 cm. That's cool.

The one week long campaign wrapped up with 24,000+ donation. That's not bad for around 115 people in the office. It's one of my favorite events every year.

court experience

I went to court for a hearing of my traffic ticket this afternoon. The first time experience in my life. Just another first time.

We arrived in the NW court at 1:00pm, half an hour earlier than the hearing time. People were gathering outside of the court room and two police officers arrived as well. All the hearing for this court today are traffic tickets. Bearing some uncertain feeling when I entered the court. I'm not feeling guilty at all and I had prepared a true and strong explanation. The judge, a woman, looks very kind. The previous several hearings went well. Two acknowledged guilty but their fines are reduced to as little as $10, with a valid/understandable reason for the violation. That's a good sign for today. :-). My heart was pounding heavily when the judge called my name and I was standing in front of the judge.

Unfortunately, the officer wasn't present. (Fortunate to me) All my preparations are useless. My strongest word "No, I'm not guilty!" ended my first hearing. The debate, explanation that I was anticipating didn't happen at all. Then I won my first court hearing in my life. :-)

From this experience, I learned two things. First of all, dispute all the traffic tickets. Even though you were guilty with clear evidence, such as speeding, red light violation, your reasons or valid excuse presented to the judge may ended up with a much smaller fine for you. You may also win the dispute when the officer is not present and that's the case in a lot of circumstance. Second. as Canada is a lawful society, going to the court sometimes may be a good solution to conflicts. The second thought comes from my friend's experience of suing her landlord to get her deposit back. One more thing, to support the second thought, don't leave evidence to others just in case any dispute may happen later on, such as in your working place. ....

This topic is worth of discussing. It may be interesting to cover it later on.

Hyperion

I finished the reading of the magnificent "Hyperion" and "The fall of Hyperion". This sci-fiction was written by Dan Simmons in early 1990s and had won the Hugo award for the best novel of 1989. The story happens in the future when humankind had colonized thousands of world in the universe. Before the outbreak of war between humankind and outster, seven people were chosen to the last pilgrim of Shrike to Hyperion, a mystery colonial star with time tomb. The first book talks about the story of the seven pilgrims and second one reveals the plot behind the war and the fate of the pilgrims. I won't cover the details of the story here. What impress me most in this book is the rich poem embedded in this scifi book. I've read a lot of scifi, in English and Chinese. This is the first of the kind with poems, literature, and poet in the story. Actually, the name of "Hyperion" was coming from the unfinished epic poem of John Keats. John Keats also serve an important role in the book. The story is a sort of mixture between fantasy and scifi. Dan had created a world spanning thousands of years, mingling space and time. It is my first experience of reading scifi book like reading traditional literature, even English poem. I've learned a lot and I have to say that the world is fascinating. I love reading long space sagas. This one is definitely on the top of my favorite. I'll try to read the Chinese translation later, as the English is full of poem and literature, religions, etc. I bought other books by this author and will read them later.

I am now reading another scifi book, "Spin", by Robert Charles Wilson. This one is also an award winner.

a not so long "long run"

I did a not so long "long run" this afternoon. It's about 14k including warm up and warm down. I was so anxious to go out for running as today may be the last shining day this week. I still feel that I may not fully recovered from last Friday's fartlek running on Burnaby mountain. Anyway, I was running alone this afternoon. To run together with other coworker may be more fun, like this Monday's easy run. But I feel that I have to run along as I want to run longer time with longer distance today.

In King George Park, I did 6 loops (10k) in 50min. I am confident now that I can finish the next Sun Run in 50 minutes. The first 2 loops seems easy. I feel a bit sore with the leg in the 3rd loop. However, I feel pace is faster in the 4th and 5th loop. The 6th loop is much easier as I know I gonna finish it.

I don't what kind of training it is for today, maybe tempo. Whatever, it is run for fun. That's enough. To prepare for the marathon, I apparently need more long run training.

The pace of this afternoon is about 5m/k. So, I feel 6m/k would be quite suitable for my long run.

100K Road Running Race Relay

I've made my 1st relay road race last Saturday. I get up at 4:00am and start running at 6:00am. The race is 100Km and we were a team of 8. I was the 1st leg and made 9.5km. Overall, we had a great team and was the 5th among our division (Recreational group) and 37th overall.
Thanks to Kenneth, who was the 13th in his tough leg. He improved our overall performance.

http://www.raceheadquarters.com/results/2008/run/H2H2008Overall.html

I was the 64th in my leg and it's not too bad. But I should be able to put a bit harder if there are more signs there. Anyhow, I started when it was still dark. I run into water accumulated on the road in the middle. When I finished and got home, Linda hadn't get up yet. :-)

I have registered for the Vancouver Marathon 2009. Hopefully, I can made it.

I love running.

A Saturday

I was waiting for Linda in a starbucks store in UBC. It is my first experience. A sense of leisure in a lovely Saturday morning. The store is getting busier around 12:45pm.

I was reading today's Vancouver Sun. Without Internet access, you feel it is not very convenient. However, it is a sprout of a leisure mood with the music hovering around in the air.

I start to understand why people are so used to this kind of living. It is a bit bourgeois.

Had dinner at Phoebe's place.
Discussed about the realty market with Steve, who is really pessimistic about the realty market in Vancouver. One thing he mentioned that his brother was an engineer working on usb device, software/hardware. So, he may be a good candidate for an internal referral. Let's see.

The dinner was quite good. It's a potluck and buffet style. It won't be too much trouble for hosts to cook. I think that we should adopt this kind of dinner for party later on. At any rate, we have party for fun, not just for food.

We played Texas Hold'em after the dinner. I won at the end. Haven't played for a while and it is fun to pick it up again.

Water is too clean to foster fish

From the zd_alumni mailing list, I came across this old Chinese saying.

"Water is too clean to foster fish,
person is too smart to have pals."

Most of us knows the first part of the idiom. It is almost the first time that I know the second part of it. I totally agree with it. This idiom conveys a philosophy here that people has to be accommodating, willing to accommodate difference of others. Otherwise, you will be alone in the world.

Stock trading tips (zz)

The original post is from mitbbs.com
-------------------------------------------------
ThomsonOne.

(not for me)

COMP, SPX,
DJIA, Russel 2000 (IWM), NDX, SOX, BKX, XBD, RLX, HUI, OSX,CRB, DX/Y.
http://www.sectorspdr.com/sectortracker provides SPDRs sector tracker.

(this one is really good)

(this one is quite helpful)

MACD, Stochastic,
Bollinger Band. http://www.stockcharts.com has all the technical indicators for free.
地trade against it.

(not much experience, won't believe it)

(strong support!!)

(good point)

(most important!!! bloody experience)

(only veteran will do this)

whatever, shorted AMZN at $43 with 25% allocation,后来
10%。 3) hold large position through earning without any protection.
4) AH open new position with another 25% (
cleared other position to get the money).
option’s time value)

(not gambling)

in 2001 the worst is +0.2%) ,公司营利却很漂亮。

BE PATIENT!!
0) over-allocation is a killer, when you want to add to a losing position
, think about AMZN to make sure you have good reason for that.
0) trade is about avoiding mistakes than making profits.
0)no open new position AH, close position is fine.
1) before you initiate a trade, write down the reasons for that.
2) no panic any time.
3) stick to limit, cut loss early.
4) stick to the plan that you have thought over.
8) hold on to your position, don't rush to jump from one to another.
9) don't short stock whose market cap is under 3B and volume is less than 3M.
10) don't let one bad trade affect other trades.
14) when you take a hedged position, don't rush to close positions on one
side.

OPTION.
16) taking profit, don't hold any position until you have clear conviction
about where market is going.

whenever you make one trade.

long run

I've made two 20k and one 16k long runs in the last three weeks. I am so confident that I can finish my first half-marathon in the coming weekend. The first long run seems not easy and the second one is not that hard. I made it on the top of the Burnaby mountain, a small loop of the campus. Each loop is about 3.3 km and I did 6 loops for the 20km long run.

There are some uphill and downhill in the loop. I love this trail as the terrain changes with up/down hills. When the weather is cool, like cloudy, the long run is a very pleasant experience. If it is too much sunshine, like in the 16k long run, it's easy getting exhausted.

Anyhow, for long run, you have to start slower. I usually made my first loop in 21-22 minutes. The second and third loops are the most exciting time as you are warmed up and not tired at all. The fourth and fifth ones are quite challenging and you have to endure them. The final one is exciting coz you know that you are approaching the destination. You were boosted by the Adrenaline.

Questrade Sucks!!!

I won't recommend Questrade to any of my friends and I will ask my friends to transfer out their questrade account. Their webtrader sucks. It shows inaccurate transaction history. When I called in, they send me to the www.penson.com website to check the history. I understand that they may have some connections, but it sucks that you got inaccurate information from questrade website and you have to check another website for the history information.

Also, the webtrader interface is so ugly. The claimed 4.99 trading fee is not true. If you trade more than 400 shares, the price goes up to 10+ dollars. I used to use CIBC, and I found CIBC is much much better than Questrade, even though I think CIBC is not a very good brokerage as well. I really regret that I transferred out my CIBC account. I have to transfer back to my CIBC account even though I have to pay $120 for the transfer.

March into top 1,000,000 ranking

We've made a big jump in the ranking of star5.ca. It starts from about 11,000,000 in Dec. 07 and it is around 1,300,000 in the middle of Feb. 08. In less than 2 months, we have progressed 10,000,000 ranks. That's amazing. Some of my thoughts on the development of the star5.ca websites.

* beef up classified ad. add image upload, content editing, delete support, provide better service for registered users/merchants, email hiding, post emailing.

* add more yellow page content

* add advertisement platform, merchants can add/edit their own sale page, providing sub-domain names to sponsor merchants.

* add my Faceb00k application

* switch to dedicated server or dedicated shared host to provide better services.

Time Fly

Time fly every second
ever since we were children
If you don't catch up the step
you aren't able to pick the life fruit.

Hey, how about my first English poem? Hahaha.

* We went to Calgary before the X'mas to visit my cousin and her family there. We had enjoyed the hot spring in Rockie Mountain. The snow scene in Lake Louise. I even went to my first ice fishing in Chain Lake at south of Calgary. You may check out the photo album below.
The Trip to Calgary

* The X'mas were quite busy for us. We only stay at home for two nights. Every day we had appointment with friends and had a lot fun with friends together. You won't feel lonely in such a busy and crowded holiday season.

* One more significant change in my life is that I had relaunched my Chinese Portal Website after the new year of 2008 with the help of TT, WB, and XJ. We are working together to bring this website up to the front. So far, we've made some progress. The 3-month Alexa rank of the star5.ca has jumped from 12M to around 2.5M globally. The 1-week rank is around 1M now. Only after 1 month's work. So, I believe that we can realize our goal to reach 1M within 3 months.
