6 New Web Technologies of 2008 You Need to Use Now

In this article "6 New Web Technologies of 2008 You Need to Use Now", the author lists 6 new web technologies of 2008 that he/she thinks important. The list is:

1. Identity management, such as open id, google sns, facebook connect. My second favorite of 2008. No need to keep track of so many ID online.
2. HTML5, with new features, like audio/video, drag'n'drop support. This one is kinda earlier. Not supported by all browsers I guess.
3. Life streaming, never tried, don't know, not a big fan
4. Firefox 3, My favorite browser, although I am still using FF2 on my EEE pc.
5. Google Chrome. Tried once, not a big fan. No Linux version yet. This one may give FF and IE more pressures on development.
6. Location Awareness. My favorite technology of 2008. With GPS becomes more and more popular in cell phone, it is actually the trend of web services/apps. A website should design with location awareness support.

Review of 2008

Let me review the year of 2008 and plan my 2009.

Things I did in 2008.

* Parent visit us for half year. Spend half year with my parents in 15 years since I left Chongqing in 2003. Parent are old apparently. I am still a child in front of them, but I feel that I am now the leading role in the family and be responsible for the family. I have to take care of them when they are here with us.

* Family issue. A lot of conflict and struggle. It is the seven year itch for sure. Both of us should be more careful with the relationship. Relationship needs more care and love.

* Work. Get more experience with Linux. But spend a lot of time working on WR toolchain. I am now the linux BSP support team. The position is not the core position but it is unique for now. I gain some more experience with kernel upgrade and use git to manage the kernel. Gain more experience with linker, makefile, bash programming.

* My spare time. I spend a lot of time in the first half year to work on the star5.ca website. However, it turns out that to maintain the content may consume so much time. I'd better work on some project to generate content automatically.

* Stock trading. I did not bad compared to the market and I had even some profit so far. I had some good time in Aug and Sep when I was bearish of the market. However, I lost most of the profit in Oct when I was a bit bullish and market fluctuate too much. Fortunately, my portfolio is still green when I bought low in Nov and Dec. My gold and silver investment turns out much better than others. I am also looking into the high dividend stock.

* Sports. I am now a serious runner now. After I finished my second sunrun this year, I decide to do a half-marathon. With not so constant training, I did not bad in myt first HM (1:57). So, I decide to go for a full marathon next year in Vancouver. I finally found a hobby in sports. That's running. I enjoy running outside, with your own pace and pants. To run in a trail, like in Burnaby mountain, is even enjoyable than running on the road.

2009. Better to set some goals.

* Improve family relationship. To prepare the immigration for my parents and in-laws.

* Seek promotion in work and more responsibilities. Overhaul of the build system, nightly build, regression test, kernel benchmarking, open source package validation. Better to keep one co-op in our team for supporting. Setup git repository for kernel development. Submit Broadcom patches to kernel.org.

* Train and run my first full marathon. Prepare for another one in Autumn if the first one is finished well.

* Read the Sci-Fi books I bought. Photography. Video.

* My website or application development.
* search engine of classified.
* restaurant review
* use my server for alrishasoft, haochen, leochen, zjuaavan,
* register domain for friends, other small business, setup website templates

Internet Radio

I bought an Internet Radio/Alarm with a deal from Dell's website (50% off). The brand is Aluratek.

Listening to the new Internet Radio device I bought before the Christmas, I remembered that I was discussing the Internet with Andy the other days. I believe in the next 5-10 years, Internet will be the dominate media. The Internet Radio is the example. I love this device. You can easily browse a list of radio stations and choose what you want. With more than 11,000 stations to choose from all over the world, I can listen to some Chinese radio then. The name of the song/performance broadcast online is also shown on the LCD screen. Although you can listen to radio from your pc/laptop, it may not be as convenient as to setup with this Internet Radio device. I love music and listen to radio ever since my childhood. So, this device is perfect for me. I don't need to turn on computer and I can listen to radio anywhere with the wireless connection.

Given the current trend of video on demand, such as netflix and youtube. I believe that IPTV will dominate the TV market for the next generation, if the content provider finally agree to broadcast their content online, just like the radio station to bring their content online. Younger generation, like my nephew, they are so accustomed to watch video online, play games online. It is so easy to project that in the next 10-20 years, when the teenager is the majority of the society, delivery of content online will the majority.

Although I still buy newspaper sometime, I just read newspaper online in most of the time. It's much easier and convenient to read newspaper online. A Newspaper publisher will go out of business if they can't catch up with this trend.

With Internet as the main media to deliver content to people, there are a lot of business will benefit from this transition in the next 10-20 years, such as digital publishing, wireless network device, Internet radio/tv device, content review, search ...
